Computer-created images purporting to show Nicolás Maduro under arrest following his apprehension by the United States have gained many millions of impressions on social media.
How AI Images of the President Surfaced Rapidly
Initial fake synthetic picture apparently displaying him taken off a aircraft emerged within hours. The picture was absent from any authoritative US channels; rather, it was published on the platform X by an account purporting to be an “AI video art enthusiast”.
Verification involved an AI-watermark detector, confirming the image was produced or modified with generative AI.
Further synthetic visuals began to spread in the following period, purporting to present different views of Maduro under guard. Discernible identifying marks on these images reveal they came from an Instagram profile named ultravfx.
SynthID indicates the further images were similarly created or altered generative models.
Authentic Image Posted but Fabrications Persisted
Donald Trump posted the genuine photograph of Maduro handcuffed aboard the US Navy ship on Saturday morning. However, despite the authentic image was made public, synthetic pictures kept circulating but were altered to show the grey athletic wear worn by Maduro.
Online investigation show these altered fabrications were initially shared on the video platform by a digital art profile. Similarly, the AI-watermark detector says these subsequent pictures were produced with AI tools.
