‘All those silly things – do them’: The striker’s journey from gurney to scoring with Athletic Bilbao
Thehe initial occasion the Athletic striker played in English soil, an young playing for the reserve team against German opponents at Adams Park in fall 2015, he found the net. During his subsequent match he appeared in British turf, against the Black Cats weeks after, he scored. Another occasion, against Manchester City not long later, sure enough, he scored again. When he returned to the city to play against the Red Devils at Leigh Sports Village in that year, he found the back of the net. It was a superb volley, as well. “Truly,” he says, “it’s a top-class goal I’ve netted.” Therefore the team did what was necessary: they took him off.
“I was furious,” the forward says, and then he starts laughing. “I’m sure there’s footage. We went to play United and I was pretty good. I wasn’t allowed to feature the second half: I was without a signed agreement, I kept finding the net, there were lots of rumours, it’s typical. I’m unsure regarding interest from Newcastle, but I came across reports about the Red Devils, the usual talk. It’s unclear if it was accurate, but supposing an offer came, I would have wanted to stay at the club. It’s a privilege.”
La Real relieve strain with extraordinary derby triumph
At Lezama, the Basque Country, the morning session is about to start; following that, the quick travel to Loiu airport and another trip to the UK, this time to play Newcastle in the Champions League on Wednesday. Mentioning that phrase brings a smile to his face. This is proving a tough year for the club, partly because of the requirements of their participation. Defeated late on in the derby on Saturday, they have won only one of their recent league fixtures and lost against Arsenal and the German side in Europe. But, consider the broader view, the major occasions he’s experienced and future challenges, and a sense of thankful reflection within him.
In the the period since he had rejoined the team, Guruzeta has been a semi-final participant, prevented from reaching a domestic final by United, and has ridden an historic vessel along the Nervión river surrounded by a huge crowd after winning the Copa del Rey, the team’s initial silverware in four decades. Now he is the top goal-getter in the European competition, where they are distinctive and making their first appearance in a decade. “I never imagined this,” he admits.
He considered it hard enough just to break into the senior squad and his assessment was correct. The son of the one-time rival player Xabi Guruzeta and a dedicated fan at the club that are now his rivals, the forward is a graduate of Antiguoko, the local academy that produced the coach, the former star and the Bournemouth manager. He signed for Athletic at his teens but after his first-team bow in August 2018, he suffered a ACL injury, being released, a drop in category and a recall before he could truly get a chance, coming back aged 26 to enjoy the highlights of his career.
“Entering the youth system not expecting to reach the senior squad but each step you advance through you’re remaining and you can observe the approach. You get there but … departure is necessary.” He featured briefly in six matches in six games between his bow and February 2019. “Subsequently I returned to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. Several appearances at that level and I tear my cruciate.
“A severe disappointment but In retrospect as a turning point because it shifted the outlook. Recovering from a long-term injury is difficult, but it’s beneficial. You cultivate routines you didn’t have. It’s not that you don’t look after yourself, but I did the sessions and then head home, typical youth behavior. At Lezama, facilities are comprehensive, so do everything. Work, precaution. Hit the weights. If your hips aren’t balanced, address that. With decent ankle function, improve it more. All those ‘silly things’: do them.
“In the first team you’re going to face physical challenges who have experienced contact 200,000 times. Extremely powerful. Seeing previous pictures: I had slender legs. Injuries are inevitable. Look at pictures of me now and it’s totally different. Recovery revealed that. Sessions end, but additional work remains. Everyone else is ready, really ready; the same applies.”
Game time is essential. Guruzeta departed emotionally in that year, in his early twenties, moving to a lower level. During his Sabadell spell in 2020-21, he got three strikes in forty appearances. With Amorebieta in the second half of 2021-22, the scoring picked up. “Many experience this: temporary moves, ended deals. If you turn it round, dedication, confidence, and if one day they need someone for your role, a return could happen. Readiness is vital. When they decided to call again, a fantasy realized. Lifting the cup, compete continentally, and reach the Champions League … pfff.”
Little surprise he states savor the moment. All the more so after the previous season which, sometimes, was about endurance. Previously the main threat with sixteen goals, last season he got seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
