2026 Dubbed the Age of the Croaking Craze.

Although I thoroughly enjoyed the recent Day of the Devs showcase was a delight to watch, my biggest takeaway was not the intended one: I am certain that 2026 will be the unrivaled era for frogs in video games.

A surprising total of five of the featured titles—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—in some way feature these hoppy characters. Given that a gathering of frogs is termed an army, it appears they are launching an invasion.

From Classic Icons to Modern Mania

Amphibians have been not at all new to the gaming landscape. Ever since the era of Frogger to the iconic froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have consistently maintained a special place. Yet, their visibility has markedly increased in recent times.

A quick search for "frog game" on Steam unveils an absolute deluge of results. Granted, some of these are novelty titles, a sizable number are serious amphibian adventures.

A Data-Driven Dive

To grasp this rise, I conducted a detailed review into the last half-decade of frog-related gaming on Steam. My approach was based on clear indicators, focusing on games with frogs in the title or clearly visible in screenshots.

The findings paint a clear picture: a consistent increase from under 20 titles in 2020 to almost 60 in 2025.

This notable escalation prompts the question: why the sudden leap? The frog's elevated place in the broader culture is somewhat evident elsewhere, like the popularity of Frog and Toad as nostalgic figures. But, the explosion in gaming seems particularly pronounced.

Why Frogs? The Game Design Advantage

Frankly, this is a shift I can get behind. Frogs offer inherent appealing traits for game developers.

  • Weird Little Guys: They are incredibly easy to be designed as memorable characters that tend to be a highlight in any game.
  • Dynamic Mechanics: Their stretchy limbs and sticky tongues lend themselves to a wide array of unique mechanics.

A number of the showcased games smartly employ these traits. For instance the tongue-based traversal in Big Hops and the extra-long limb puzzles of Stretchmancer.

The Leap Into 2026

So, what does this mean for 2026? With five frog games already announced before the year has even begun—and the possibility for more—the evidence suggests for it to be the largest year for amphibian gaming.

When these games are received positively—and traditionally, games from this showcase have a strong track record—we may indeed be entering a full-blown amphibian entertainment revival.
